Reborn dolls are dolls or doll kits that are painted, rooted, and weighted too look, feel, and smell like real baby’s.
In the past a store bought vinyl doll was used. The paint would be stripped off and then the inside and out would be painted and blushed. Since this became popular, the doll manufacturers now produce doll KITS which consist of the doll head, and limbs. So current reborning is the painting of the doll kits, and rooting of the hair…often with one tiny strand of hair at a time.Have a look at silicone reborn babies for more info on this.
The most popular place to buy a reborn doll is on eBay. You can also search Google, but eBay will show you the feedback the artist has received, and other dolls they’ve made in the past. Be sure to look for clear and up close pictures of the baby, and pictures of the scalp. A well made reborn will not have plugs or clumps of hair coming out of the scalp.
Reborns will have vinyl or silicone limbs and head. The body is often flannel, or doe suede and will have joints on the arms and legs so you can pose your new doll. Inside the limbs, body and head the artist will use polyester fibre fill, glass beads, or plastic poly-pellets to make your doll feel heavy. If done properly, the doll will feel like a newborn baby when you hold her in your arms. I personally use a drop of baby powder scented oil inside the body to give her a gentle baby powder scent. This is a light scent and you can give the body a gentle squeeze to release more scent.
